Maybe it could be a combination of two things.  I have a tar ball I keep
around of an old development environment.  When I need a new kernel for
this old environment I chroot into it, compile, and then move the kernel
and modules to our test environment.  For you, this test environment
could be vmware or a dual boot OS.  Something like that maybe?
