The distro kernels are heavily patched by the distro kernel maintainers. They do their own tweaking, testing, patching work. So, it is not advisable to use it for your _learning_. You always use the kernel sources provided and used by kernel developers (kernel.org) for applying patches created by kernel-related packages or for development.
