Thunderbird makes it pretty hard to send in-line patches but I was able
to figure out the kinks thanks to this LKML thread:

The basic steps to make it work as expected:

* compose the email *in HTML mode* (but make sure you select text-only
when sending out, last thing you want is to send HTML emails to LKML:)
* when you're ready to insert the patch, switch the style to "Preformat"
* open the patch in some editor (gedit works for me), select & copy it
into clipboard
* in your composer window: Edit->Paste Without Formatting
* send the email (double-check it's being sent text-only)

You need to play with it a bit to get it right, but it's doable :)
