For compiling userspace apps, you should be able to do this with no
problem using some Makefile magic - use the results of a `uname -m` to
determine - you should get "i686" on x86-32 systems, and "x86_64" on
AMD64 systems (not sure about IA64 or EMT64 systems - don't have one
to try it on) - you should be able to do a custom -D based on the
results.
