So if my s_blocksize = PAGE_CACHE_SIZE/2

Yes

How will things get impacted if i still stick to
s_blocksize_bits=PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT?Will I get an error or will a block
span across 2 pages and hence dismal system performance?

Most likely an data corruption i believe.(Filesystem creators are not causal programmers). Use sb_set_blocksize which takes a pointer to superblock structure and block size value and will do validity check and set blocksize and blocksize_bits appopriately rather setting these values directly.
