Hi mark,
Actually i was suffering this problem last one month.
I put off SMP on make config but still anather problem comming.
When I googled this problem , I got, suggested to use GCC 2.95.3.
So i went to download the 2.95.3 source code as i had 2.3.5.
But GCC was not compiling.
So my question can i compile 2.4.26 kernel with GCC 2.3.5       yes/No(If somebody done it or not)
I need GCC 2.95.3 to compile 2.4.26 kernel                                 yes/no (")

Please address this issue...

are you using more than one cpu ?

I had an error while compiling the 2.6.15 (SCSI).

As the pc didn't have SCSI I dropped it and afterward's everything
compiled fine.

Try to put SMP out of it maybe it work's as a workaround ...
