Basically ACK.
And please note that "kernel development" as such has nothing to do with
"bootloader development" as such.

Yup. Check with your boards description/manual/fact sheet which
bootloader is installed (and I expect that one *is* installed since
bootloader flashing needs special hardware)
Personally I don't have any preference on boot loaders as long as they
are
-) working,
-) reasonably cheap und
-) support booting from the ethernet (if you have the hardware on the
   board).
