Yes, it is confusing, see the third edition of the Linux Device Drivers
book for details as to how this all works, if you do not understand it.
It's online for free if you can't buy a copy.

Why do you want to know about this?  Do you want to change it?  Almost
no one has to mess with the kset and kobject interface in the kernel, I
would not recommend that for anyone...
