Distinguish different types of CDs on linux

Hi,
Does linux provide a mechanism or API to distinguish differnt types of
CD's such as audio CD, video CD, a normal cd containing some files , a
DVD etc. The reason is,  I am implementing an application that
would do different actions based on the type of CD inserted.
