kernel newbies.. kernel newbies...remember the list we are on.
newbies yes - but 'kernel' too.
its not for help 'finding your way around a desktop'

I know we all go to man pages right away, but everyone needs to learn...

man and self-sufficiency are good lessons.

Just my 2 cents....
Remember.. no such thing as a dumb question...

it was the level of effort I spoke to. Im a newbie too - I just try to dig a little 1st.
My answer to the original question had no pejorative tones.

Also, I suspect the OP had other facets of the question that were unstated,
like inside/outside the kernel. I guess I baited him to explain more what his
requirements were - reading /proc takes time, and I would have liked to see
answers that addressed faster-lighter data-collection than is done by 'top'

finally, 'man oh man' was answer to 'lnx lnx' Q.
fwiw, I thought the 3-entendre was a little bit amusing.

apologies to the flamed/crispy
