Making a new kernel module

I am trying to make a kernel module but following the steps in
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-7.3-Manual/custom-guide/ch-custom-kernel.html
.. i am supposed to do "make dep" to set up all the dependancies
correctly but i get a warning "make dep is unnecessary now". Is there
any clue why i get this message?

I also want to know from where to get an updated working configuration
file for kernel 2.6.5-1.358 for an i386 architecture?

Lastly, is there any other way to make a loadable kernel module?

Thank you
