Kernel Compile

I downloaded kernel 2.6.11.2 from ftp.kernel.org and after was to 
compile it, the new bzImage was generated, restarted my machine and when 
boot loader entry in new kernel image, it does'nt mount IDE devices, 
saying that found an unknow device. Where I enable in menu kernel config 
to fix this error?
