The MSDOS file system supports the 8.3 directory naming, whereas vfat allows the
long file names that you'd expect to see with Win95+.  There are other
differences, but that is the primary user-identifiable one.  command.com only
understands the MSDOS filesystem - thrat's why you'll see things like
C:\NETWOR~1\DOCUME~1 and the like if you boot a Win95/98/Me box into DOS.

Don't know how intermixed the code is - haven't looked at the filesystems code yet.
