strace rmmod and see what it's trying to do.

On RPM based systems:

  rpm -qf `which rmmod`
  
On Debian based systems:

  dpkg -S `which rmmod`

That tells you the package name. Get the source package and you're set.

That "extra functionality" might very well be the cause of your
problem. Try to recreate it without the "extra functionality".
