I had the same error (only depmod, not ksyms) during
module installation when upgrading to a 2.6 kernel.
Installing the latest module-init-tools fixed the
problem for me. 

I don't know if this will apply to your situation but
I'll note that by default module-init-tools (3.1)
installs to /usr/sbin, but my distro/kbuild needed it
to be in /sbin.
