regarding the problem of booting up you can easily boot into the old and the new kernel as you wish as you have changed the paths in the grub.conf
do one thing while giving the option root= in grub.conf check the partition with rdev command and put the root partion name in the root= option
after booting you may face some problem with X but you can move in command mode it can be solved by typin X -configure
