The best tools are (in the order of decreasing usefulness)
1. vim+grep
2. vim+grep+ctags
3. vim+grep+ctags+cscope.

If you are an emacs fan, s/vim/emacs/
If you use (1) you will have a precise idea of what function/variable/...etc is defined in which file. It might take a while to get used to. It is worth the time.
