register_disk query

hi,

what does exactly register_disk do(is it reads the partion table or creates one)
say if we have 5 devices(in a single device driver handling with a
major no say 222)
and we have to support a max of 16 partions,then what should we
speicfy in arguments .(say if at all we need to support different
no:of partions for 4 devices then what is the arguments should we
specify)
