I will recommend Chapter 18 (Networking) in:

[1] Daniel P. Bovet & Marco Cesati. (July 2003). Understanding the
Linux Kernel. (2nd ed.). O'Reilly.

You might also want to check this:

Although the above cover 2.4 kernel and 2.2 kernel respectively, they
should get you started :)
