A small doubt

Hi there,

When we install linux from one of the distributions like fedora or SuSE, there
is no problem with hardware detection.
But when we manually compile the kernel, how is it that we pass the
information that I have so and so hardware and how appropriate drivers are
loaded?

Am I missing something?
please throw light on this.
