In my view,for knowing the kernel, the knowledge of underlying computer architecture is a must. The detailed description of the arch is usually published by the manufacturer. I think it is a good idea to study those manuals before asking about computer architecture.
For x86, http://www.x86.org is a good place to be. A lot of manuals and articles. esp see processor manuals.
For PPC, http://www-306.ibm.com/chips/techlib/techlib.nsf/productfamilies/PowerPC
Linux supports a lot more archs But I have no idea.
