Thanks so much for the info.  It helps a lot!

Does this also work in the other way?  I.e. suppose we
have re-compiled a kernel lk2.4 with
CONFIG_SCSI_MULTI_LUN=y, can we add 

options scsi_mod max_scsi_luns=0 (or 1?)

to /etc/modules.conf, so kernel (SCSI mid-layer) only
scan the first LUN (lun0)?
