no need to do such nasty things...
all u need to do is gunzip the initrd file, and mount it via the loopback.
then u copy manually the jbd module to the initrd, and change the linuxrc 
file to load it and ur ext3.ko modules. 
u then umount it, repack it, and ur ready to go ;)
