module init tools problems

Hi:

I am currently working on kernel 2.4.18-14 and 2.6.0-test2. As such I have
2 versions of modutils. One which comes with the stock RH 8.0 system and
is good enough for only loading 2.4.* specific modules and the other which
I installed specifically for 2.6.* kernels(module-init-tools-0.9.15-pre4).

The problem is that when I boot the 2.6.* kernel , it uses the default modprobe which barfs "QM_MODULES NOT SUPPORTED". The question that I have is that how do I trick 2.6.* kernel to use the newly installed modprobe?
Also will the new modprobe be able to load 2.4.* modules?

If it sounds confusing, lemme know. I'll try to explain better.
