backward compatibility

hi all,
this may seem to be a very a naive question. but this
has been something which has me in a bit of
speculation regarding linux. recently i have been
coming across quite a few softwares which run
perfectly well on redhat 7.3 but have problems on red
hat 8.0 and 9.0 though no separate versions of the s/w
are reported to be available for 8.0 and 9.0 (acrobat
reader 5.0 for instance).i dont know whether it is
because of the difference in kernels or something else
but why is it that both the linux kernels and the
various distros are evolving at a rate which is
becoming uncatchable for, as far as i know, the linux
users themselves, even if the evolution is catching
pace it should be backward compatible, since one
cannot be expected to keep installing a new version on
a weekly or a fornightly basis.
regards
sumit
