__devinit, __devexit, __init and __exit

Hi,

Could someone please explain to me the rationale of using a specific one
of the above macros? I am confused about when it is correct to use e.g.
__devinit instead of __init. And while I am at it.. Should all __devexit
functions be static void and should all __devinit functions be static
int??

All in all, the usage of said macros are somewhat confusing :-(

Thanks a lot in advance,
  jules
