Thanks! Indeed I did NOT know that already.

I see kernelnewbies.org does not yet offer a list of
commands every Unix newbie soon will know. And
http://www.unixnewbies.org/ does not yet exist.

My personal list appears buried inside:
http://members.aol.com/plscsi/tools/knoppix/index.html

I quote:

"What Is Knoppix"

"2. School & work taught me the basic Unix commands
long ago: bash cat cd cp csh dd df echo egrep emacs
export find grep head id info less ls man mount pwd rm
sed sort strings sudo tail tar tr uname vi which etc."

By now I see I need to add:

file more set setenv tee what

What else?

Because personally I work with Mac OS X apps as much
as I work with the Linux kernel, I try to distinguish
what I learn of Unix, common to Mac and Linux, from
what I learn of Linux.

Pat LaVarre

P.S. I haven't yet figured out how to make the next
level of detail accessible e.g. not just bash, but
`export PS1='$ ' ; export -n` and not just tr, but `tr
-s ...` and not just `mount` but `mount -o loop ...`.
