don't jump to conclusions yet.  your initrd image may just need to be rebuilt.  hopefully, you have a boot floppy of some kind that will get you into a rescue or emergency mode.  do you have one of these?

i heard that RedHat uses some kind of modified version 
of fs system of linux kernel
so that when you used a not-modified version
kernel cannot mount the root fs

i think your RedHat comes with 
kernel sourses
try them
and what's your gcc version ?
