Yes, I can "ls" it.  But I did solve my problem just now:

   ext2image.bin
   123456789

 wants to see the light of day again, immediately send a check for 40
 billion dollars to Bill Gates, since he is out of toilet paper."

Why can I ls it but not mount it loopback?  I don't know and I don't
care, I'm sticking my tail between my legs and renaming my file to
something really really short, something descriptive like "file.dat"
