kernel executable?

I am running ReHat Linux 7.1 with the Linux kernel-2.4.2.

Am attempting to compile a new kernel

RPM'd the kernal souce files from the RedHat CDROM to /usr/src/kernel-2.4.2

I used the "Kernel How-To Ver4.4 to compile the kernel which ia at:

 /usr/src/lermel-2.4.2/arch/i386/boot/bzImage

I moved this to /boot as bzImage.myker

Modified Lilo.conf to accept bzImage.myker as an alternate boot

Booted and failed (repeatedly) at about the Interactive query?????

During much headscratching I saw that bzImage.myker was not an executable
file (*) but the original kernel of /boot/vmlinux-2.4.2 was executable???.

Why is the bzImage.myker not an executable or does it have to be??????

Thanks, Ron
