buffer managment

Dear list,

I'm having troubles with buffer operation primitives. In
particular, I'm uncertain in what situations should I use
  -- mark_buffer_dirty()
  -- mark_buffer_dirty_inode()
  -- mark_buffer_uptodate()
  -- mark_buffer_clean()
  -- mark_buffer_async()
  -- bforget()

I'd really appreciate if someone could point me to the right
direction.

bit,
adam
