Linux traditionally supported only 16 bit uids and gids. At some point,
someone felt this limitation was a little too strong, so they extended
the [ug]ids to 32 bits, and added new systemcalls to handle the longer
data types.

Check the documentation in Documentation/ for the
/proc/sys/kernel/overflowuid and overflowgid files.
