I'm afraid you are making things more complicated than they need to be.
:)

There are three different methods (I know of) to interact with the
kernelnewbies group -- this email list, the web site, and IRC. You can
subscribe to the mail list using the instructions at the website
http://www.kernelnewbies.org/mailinglist.php3
(in fact, if your MTA is setup properly, you can even just run:
echo subscribe kernelnewbies | mail listar@nl.linux.org
What a country!)

The web site is more or less as you found it. :)

IRC: simply acquire an IRC client. I like irssi. Others like xchat.
BitchX remains popular (for reasons unknown :). epic is the old
reliable. mIRC if you use windows. Check out http://www.irchelp.org/ for
more information on acquiring irc clients. Once you have one, aim it at
server: irc.oftc.net, channel #kernelnewbies. I also recommend
#offtopic, as it is where a lot of kernelnewbies participate in idle
chatter, and #man3, where some user-land programming is discussed.

No passwords anywhere. :)

Cheers
