block on reading from /proc/[pid]

hi all
from a couple of days back a box running 2.4.2-2 (redhat 7.1) after some
time op usage blocks when reading from /proc/[pid] for some process ...
the ps / top / pstree / etc. cmds don't work as they 'hang' when reaching
the bad process ...
hence i can't find out which process is to blame ...

when would such a thing happen ? ( block on reading from say /proc/31315 )
?
