  I get this error when i try 'hdparm -d 1 /dev/hdc':

HDIO_SET_DMA: Operation not permitted

When i try set the dma state of my DVD to 'on', i do it like root.

I have two kernels in my sistem: 2.4.16 (this error don't exist) and
2.5.46 (this is the kernel which i get this error).

The 2.5.46 was compiled with gcc 3.2.1, and the compilation went very well.

I know i must probe 2.5.47 or 2.5.48, because this problem maybe alredy
resolute, but i don't want resolve the problem. I wanna try program the
code by myself to get HDIO_SET_DMA works well and be a permitted operation.

I am a very, very, very newbie about the kernel programming and i want to
please you for an advice about the steps i must follow:

Where can i find HDIO_SET_DMA function?, what is the method, in general,
