rtai is a realtime programming extension for the linux kernel. I think
that is the one that runs the kernel as a task on a microkernel of some
sort. (As opposed to the low latency patch and the pre-emptive kernel
patch integrated in 2.5, which try to modify the existing kernel to give
more predictable latencies.)
