I suggest reading O'Reilly's book on Real Time POSIX programming; it was
published in 1994 or so but was assuming that one would be using a
full-featured real-time system. I don't think Linux is there yet, but it
does support many of the features in the book.

Note that Linux is not a replacement for a real real-time os, such as
qnx or vxworks or friends -- but depending on your needs, it may be
sufficient. I strongly suggest spending quite a bit of time researching
options available to you before implementation starts. :)
