Although this is not a perfect solution, you can see if the wireless statistics (iw_statistics) are defined for the device you are looking at (look at struct net_device in /usr/include/linux/netdevice.h).  Of course not all drivers support wireless statistics (used for wireless extenstions).

Also, since the 802.11 MAC is supposed to look like 'ethernet' to above layers, you would think that hte MTU would still be 1518 (1500 data)?  If its different, that may give you a better idea (also let us know if it is).
