CONFIG_EXT2_FS on diskless machine

Hi,
I am running some network performance tests, running kernel 2.4.17
on a diskless machine.
NFS is used as a root file system. No ramdisk involved.

When I DISABLE support for ext2 in "make menuconfig", the
performance drops by almost 20%.

Any ideas why this could happen ?
