This would probably require a certain amount of specialised hardware -- I do not expect it will be cheap. (Note that Storage Area Networks are solving a similar problem -- one filesystem, two or more machines -- and are very expensive.) What is much easier is to use a network of some sort to share selected amounts of data among machines, similar to web servers, ftp servers, etc. -- http://immunix.org/
