Checkout Linux Trace Toolkit at http://www.opersys.com/LTT/
It might help you. If you don't want to modify the kernel source
just to place TRACE statements all over the place, or don't
want to recompile the kernel much, you may want to check out
http://www-124.ibm.com/linux/projects/dprobes.
