There are multiple packet sniffers\filters for linux with various 
features include searching within ethernet packet headers and other 
features as you specify
tcpdump (http://www.tcpdump.org/
netdude (http://netdude.sourceforge.net/)
etheral (http://www.ethereal.com/)

Most of them should have source code available which should be useful to 
Lukas too.
