kernel RAM allocation

Hello

Can somebody please explain me, why is it impossible to free some RAM on a
kmalloc request in the kernel, so that if RAM is available - you'll get
it, if not - the call will fail. Sorry, maybe I'm not very precise now -
maybe it's true not for all calls to kmalloc, but only for some
flag-values, or maybe only for some sk_alloc calls... Anyway, any
information on this subject would be greatly apprecated. ...at least there
was something like that in 2.2 kernels.

Thanks
Guennadi
