The most popular answers to this question are: ioctl, /proc files,
and making your own filesystem. I think 'make your own filesystem' is
becoming more popular, /proc files the most popular but losing ground,
and ioctl is mostly shunned and ridiculed, but still proves to be useful
from time to time.
