Kernelbug or not?

Hi.
Guess this is the rigth place to ask the question.
This is about some SCSI stuff.
When i burn a linux cd, i usually afterwards do an:
md5sum /dev/scd0
And this gives med the excactly same checksum as the iso file, but now on
kernel 2.4.16 it gives:
[root@luke root]# md5sum /dev/scd0
md5sum: /dev/scd0: Input/output error
Or just hangs and never exits, and only a reboot seems to fix it.
And so on, if I try on the other 4 scsi recorders
So is this a kernel bug or rather defect hardware?

What can i do to find out more about where the trouble is?

I have not tried all the kernelversions but on the mandrake 8.1 standard
kernel it works and it used to work on the early 2.4 kernels.

All things build into the kernel except the loopback

Output in /var/log/mesages:
