In general: later versions are more stable. See the changelogs at
http://www.kernelnewbies.org/changelogs/ and the release notes at
http://www.linux.org.uk/ .

Kernels up to linux-2.2.20 have known security holes. All kernels older
than 2.2.19 are known to break under high VM load.
