Writing to a block device ( eg. /dev/hda1)

Hi,

I am developing a small utility on the lines of mkfs (make filesystem). The problem is, how do I write raw data to a block device. Is there any function like bread, which will do the job ?

Thanks in advance.
Swapnil.
