extending max limit of routing table

Hi ,
I am using kernel 2.4.19.I am using iproute2 utility to manage routes.
The max. limit on routing table is 255( 2 of them are reserved).
I want extend the limit 1k.Is it possible to extend? If yes , how can be
this be done.
