the README says, "IMPORTANT NOTE: This version _only_ supports kernel >= 2.4.18"

so it requires at least 2.4.18 or greater.

$ uname -rv

$ lsmod | grep pptp
ip_nat_pptp             3052   0 (unused)
iptable_nat            21528   1 [ip_nat_pptp]
ip_conntrack_pptp       3664   1
ip_conntrack_proto_gre    3636   0 [ip_nat_pptp ip_conntrack_pptp]
ip_conntrack           35032   4 (autoclean) [ip_nat_pptp iptable_nat ip_conntrack_pptp ip_conntrack_proto_gre ipt_state]
