Hello every one. First of all I would thank you for your work.

I am goging to do my graduation projoct which is A GUI Personal Firewall on linux using KDE. The basic functionality will be the same as Zone Alarm on window$. The most important features are :

1- to listen on all ports and try to catch any service i.e. deamon trying to connect to network and ask the user if he trusted this deamon to act as either client or server.

2- to give the user the ability to immediately disconnect from the internet when he sees something strange.

3- to allow the user to constuct a white list for children, education ...etc .

4- trying to stop anyone trying getting into the system and inform the user about this and also putting this into a log file.

OK

The first thing I want to ask about is can I use iptables and its rules (I am new to iptables and just started learning it) to implement these especially the first feature? i.e. to build only a GUI program as an interface for iptables with some automation (away from making user write his rules)?

The second question is if the answer of the first is no can I use the source code of the iptables to make it trigger an event when it listens to a new port (i.e. a deamon trying to get on the network) instead of rejecting it ? is it easy for me as a beginner in linux programming :)?

I would appreciate anybody answering me and by the way it will be a GPL program of course( and sorry for bad english ).
